Driving Licence and Navigation

明升体育_足球竞彩网-官网 driving licence

As a rule, you can drive abroad with an EU driving licence for up to 3 months, in some countries up to 6 months. However, neither the EU document in credit card format nor the old national paper driving licences have an internationally valid translation. For this reason, we recommend getting an international driving licence for longer stays abroad.

You must apply for the international driving licence at the driving licence office (“Führerscheinstelle”) in your place of residence. In addition to the application form, please submit the following documents either in person or by mail

  • Personal identity card
  • EU driving licence card
  • A photograph (biometric photo)

Residents of the Konstanz district submit the application form (in German) to Landratsamt Konstanz (the district administrative office).

The international driving licence is valid for 3 years and is usually only accepted together with the original driving licence. Therefore, please take both with you when traveling abroad. Otherwise, you may be fined or penalized for driving without a licence.

Navigations apps

Since renting navigation devices abroad is often quite expensive, navigation apps are a good alternative. For this reason, you should definitely buy a local prepaid card beforehand so you can make calls and access the internet on your mobile phone when you travel.

A good alternative to Google Maps are the following apps, which can be downloaded from both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store:

  1. HERE WEGo: Offers the option of accessing the maps offline if they have been previously downloaded. HERE WeGo's maps use very little memory compared to Google Maps.
  2. Waze: Is the largest user-based navigation and traffic app in the world. It is a very simple app, but cannot use maps offline
  3. Maps.me: Also supports offline maps which can be downloaded per county, state or country.
  4. NaviMii: Traffic is displayed live and all common forms of transport are included. Offline maps are available.
  5. Sygic: The navigation app Sygic obtains its map material from TomTom. It is stored on the smartphone, which is why you can also navigate offline.
